Skin Pen

Looking for ways to erase tell-tale age signs, and discolourisation or scarring of the skin? At Dr Chang’s MediSpa, we are always looking to introduce the next generation of technology and advanced skin treatments. Moving up a notch is SkinPen®, a minimally-invasive mircroneedling procedure which we love.

As we age the natural structure of our skin deteriorates, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin texture. One of the major advancements in cosmetic treatments is microneedling, which has undergone an extraordinary evolution since its inception in the marketplace. And microneedling is a successful way to address these signs of ageing.

At the forefront is SkinPen®, a microneedling medical device used for collagen induction therapy. Used for the treatment of melasma and the lessening of surgical and acne scars, this minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure also reduces the telltale signs of ageing by triggering the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodelling and production of collagen and elastin – a process known as collagen induction therapy (CIT).

How does SkinPen® work?
By producing hundreds of microscopic channels into the dermal layer with the SkinPen®, the controlled micro-injuries we create not only breaks down the old and damaged strands of collagen but also increases blood flow and stimulates cellular regeneration – your body’s natural wound healing process. In turn, the production of new collagen and elastin remodels the structure, function and appearance of the skin along with a new network of blood vessels.

How long does the procedure take?
Using the medical-grade SkinPen®, our state-of-the-art microneedling procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and number of areas treated and the degree of treatment requested by the patient.

What can I expect during treatment?
A topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment. Generally, patients report feeling just the slight vibration of the SkinPen® during the treatment.

What skin issues does SkinPen® address?
SkinPen® is suited for a wide range of skin conditions including minimising fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tones, melasma, acne and surgical scars.

What are the benefits?
• The treatment reduces the signs of aging; skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles
• The treatment improves the appearance of acne scarring and melasma
• It’s a minimally invasive procedure performed with minimal recovery time
• The treatment is for all skin types [subject to health of skin, to be determined at your consultation]
• It’s effective on all areas of the body, in particular, the face, neck, hands and décolletage

Can SkinPen® remove my acne and surgical scars?
No. Microneedling procedures may improve the appearance of acne and surgical scars, however, they cannot completely remove them.

 Can SkinPen® remove my melasma?
No. Microneedling procedures may improve the appearance of melasma, however, it does not prevent the condition from reoccurring.

What areas of the skin can be treated?
The procedure is usually performed on the face, neck, hands and décolletage.

What can I expect during treatment?
A topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment. Generally, patients report feeling just the slight vibration of the SkinPen® during the 30-minute treatment.

Are the results instant?
No. It usually takes around three treatments over a four to six month period to achieve desirable results. This is because the beneficial effects associated with microneedling will rely upon the wound healing process and your unique remodelling of the collagen synthesis.

Will I experience any side-effects or complications following a SkinPen® procedure?
The SkinPen® not only controls micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process but it the application method also minimises cellular damage. Post-treatment complications are also rare so for this reason, our pre and post skin care advice must be strictly followed.
However, most patients will likely experience some minor side-effects during the post-recovery period and the total healing time depends on each individual. But they’re minimal.

What is the downtime?
The skin will appear pink to red immediately post-procedure, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. The inflammation, however, will subside from two to four days. Other common treatment responses experienced will likely include slight discomfort, dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching and peeling.

Can I resume any normal activity following a SkinPen® procedure?
Yes. Most patients resume their normal activities, however, it is important to refrain from any physical activity which may induce sweating and heat – two of the primary causes for skin irritation during the recovery process.

How many SkinPen® procedures will I need?
Every client varies due to mitigating circumstances. This can include the age, condition of the skin and personal requirements. Most patients will require more than one procedure to achieve results. Michele Hetherington, senior dermal therapist will create a treatment plan based on your individual needs and will outline the direction during your first consultation. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make and the plan may need to be reviewed over time.

Are results achieved by SkinPen® permanent?
No. Your natural collagen production and cellular turnover decrease as you age so microneedling procedures differ from patient to patient. But they are effective and to maintain an optimal effect you may be required to return eighteen months later to give your collagen an additional boost.

Will I require an aftercare regime?
Yes. We will devise an aftercare protocol including a non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.

*Individual results will vary.
