Summer is almost upon us so preparing your skin for the long, hot season ahead is not only a smart move but it’s also vital. In fact, nothing looks more luminous that healthy, glowing skin. We give you expert advice on how to achieve just that.
The chilly months are over along with the cold dry air and warm air-conditioning — environments that can deplete the skin of its natural moisture. Of the most affected most common is your natural skin barrier, which truly takes a major hit.
So how to get your inner glow back? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise!
Restoring your skin back to health
The first thing is to have your skin’s natural barrier assessed by our senior dermal therapist, Michele Hetherington, and review and align your skin-care regime in with the current condition of your skin.
There are numerous treatments to choose from which in the right hands, can reduce the appearance of skin inflammation, flaking skin and generally dull skin.
We also recommend that you shorten the length of your shower routine, especially if you like to wash with very hot water. And when you do step out of the shower to dry yourself [especially your face and décolletage], pat the skin dry and moisturise immediately after showering while your skin is damp. Another recommendation is to use a body wash with an excellent humectant and emollient to draw in the water and hydrate the skin, which in turn will spread the molecules across the skin cells and create a stronger bond.
What do I do if my skin is looking dull?
If your skin is looking dull and you’re keen to scrub any dead skin from your face, don’t immediately exfoliate as a quick fix. In fact, exfoliation can often cause more harm than good if your natural skin barrier has been compromised over winter, leaving you with micro-tears in the skin and unsightly redness, inflammation and irritation.
Another skin condition is summer acne, which is often triggered by the heat, the clogging of pores and excess oil production in the skin —a lethal combination that leaves your face prone to breakouts. And if you’re a party-person, too much alcohol and sugar can also cause skin inflammation.
Let us bring back your natural glow with the right products and procedures.
One of the best ways to kick of summer is with a medical-grade facial. Each facial is customised to the patient’s unique skin type and reactions hyperpigmentation, inflammation, acne and many more, and are also intended to optimise the health and natural glow of the skin.
The basis of a healthy skin regime includes a moisturiser, serum and toner to retain the skin’s natural moisture and clarity; preventative steps that also optimise the skin barrier’s functions during any hormonal changes and breakouts.
Our most popular facials include:
- HydraFacials for targeting hyperpigmentation, oily skin and congested pores. With each infused with medical-grade products, the HydraFacial also cleanses, exfoliates and extracts any impurities while providing hydration and antioxidant protection, giving your skin instant radiance from the inside out.
- Our Société Oxygenating Facial is a luxurious facial that infuses oxygen and hydration directly into the skin to lighten unsightly pigmentation, soothe dry or ageing skin and increase cell metabolism, with the end-results leaving your face, hands and décollage more radiant, softer and rejuvenated in appearance.
- We also offer Teen Clean treatments which are tailored specifically to young skin.
Each facial also includes LED therapy and we recommend that you purchase cosmeceutical products to use at home including a non-comedogenic moisturising cream by Biopelle Tensage.
The benefits of facials
The benefits of regular facials throughout the summer will also keep your skin properly cleansed without you having to resort to chemical peels or a laser rejuvenation procedure to achieve a glowing effect. This is because a medical-grade facial gently extract clogged pores, impurities and nasty blackheads without causing harm to your skin’s natural barrier.
Additionally, dead skin cells are lifted away along with any build-up of environmental grime; a process that leaves the skin well-moisturised and healthy, and your complexion looking radiant and silky smooth. Coupled with restorative and soothing medical-grade serums, a peptide mask and a LED therapy to ignite cellular production, one of our signature facials will hit the sweet spot and leave your skin looking more hydrated and season-ready.
If you suffer from reoccurring skin conditions such as severe acne, eczema or rosacea should undergo a facial treatment every four to six weeks to ensure that the skin remains thoroughly cleansed and moisturised.
Fotona’s 4D facial rejuvenation
Another popular treatment that will get you ‘summer-ready’ and looking fabulous for Christmas is Fotona’s 4D Facial Rejuvenation which will help you regain your youthful glow and add firmness to your face. Through the application of four unique steps that includes synergised wavelengths of energy and a peel to polish and brighten the skin, the overall effect of the 4D facial will leave you with a younger and more rejuvenated complexion with long-lasting results.
Protection from UV Rays and Air-conditioning
Never leave the house without SPF 30-50 sunscreen as UV exposure can reduce the protective skin barrier, which can lead to skin damage and premature ageing.
UV Protection at all times
Many patients believe that their foundation and mineral powder will provide ample protection, however, it is important that you re-apply every two hours —particularly if you’ve been out and about. Also, avoid using skincare products containing retinol and hydroxy acids during the day as these powerful ingredients can increase photo-sensitivity and potential sunburn.
Dehydration of the skin is also linked to air conditioning which does not allow your skin to naturally breathe. In the right environment, perspiration allows the skin to remove toxins and release grime which may build up in your skin’s pores. If you have to work in such an environment, make sure you apply a hydrating mask at night to replenish the natural moisture that you have lost during the day.
This is also a good time to whip out any medical-grade hydrating serums with ingredients that include hyaluronic acid, which helps absorb and replenishes hydration aid at a deeper level.
Our senior dermal therapist, Michele Hetherington will provide you with professional skincare expertise including the most appropriate medical-grade skincare regime for day and night.
The growth factors and snail secretion filtrate [which features collagen, elastin, vitamin C, glycolic and hyaluronic acid] and formulated in Biopelle Tensage’s Serum is another powerhouse product because of its ability to boost cellular turnover while minimising fine lines and firming and tightening the face. Not only is the serum ideal for mature skin but also patients who are concerned about ageing skin, sun damage, free-radical damage, wrinkles, fine lines and loss of firmness.
