Winter is the season where the cold, dry air can deplete your skin of its natural hydration. But there are many ways you can counter the big chill; from a targeted skin-care regime to moisture-boosting treatments.
Our Medi-Spa will keep your skin hydrated, supple and glowing all year-round.
Winter can deplete your skin of all its natural hydration — making it dry, itchy, and irritated.
From cold and windy conditions, lack of sunshine and excessive indoor heating to fewer fresher foods, taking hot showers and not moisturising morning and night, can leave your skin feeling raw along with an aged and washed out appearance. But don’t despair.
“When you address the health of your body as a whole, you are taking the first steps in maintaining the health of your skin,” says Michele Hetherington, our senior dermal therapist. And there are many simple ways to maintain the health of your natural skin, leaving it moist and supple all season long.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
It is important to remember that your skin is your body’s most vulnerable organ as it is exposed to all of the environments and natural elements.
Here are some tips on holistic winter skincare that start deep within the epidermis.
Stay hydrated. Start with drinking plenty of fluids [two to three litres per day] as our skin simply requires water to maintain its health.
Avoid Exfoliation: If your skin is naturally dry you should not exfoliate as the treatment will further compromise your skin’s natural barrier. The health of your skin will determine the regeneration process and allow better penetration of any medical-grade moisturiser.
Eat Well: Your liver, kidneys and lungs rule when it comes to your skin. Focus on a nutritional diet that is rich in antioxidants and combines healthy saturated fats found in grass-fed meat and wild salmon. Also add fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices [tumeric and ginger] your diet and avoid drinking excess alcohol and caffeine. Another great drink to start the morning and support the health of your liver is celery juice. Lemon drinks and ginger teas also rule, with each reducing inflammation and leaving your skin looking fresh and revived.
Avoid Most Soaps: Though we like to wash and scrub our hands and faces, most soaps that contain glycolic or salicylic acid and alcohol can disrupt the skin’s PH levels, strip away your skin’s protective barrier and trigger excess sebum production.
Apply plenty of SP-30 Sunscreen. Despite the cooler temperatures, you still remain at risk of excess UV ray exposure. If you’re a skier, the high altitude and reflection that intensifies with snow will expose you to even more significant risks. In the same way that you treat the summer sun, protect your skin with SP-30 [or higher] sunscreen from the harsh, winter elements.
Moisturise twice daily: Applying the right skin care is crucial to your skin’s health and well-being. So moisturise without delay once when you have cleansed your face, [morning and night].
By locking in the moisture, your cellular turnover will improve, and your skin will retain its natural water and oils.
Start with medical-grade cosmeceuticals from Biopelle Tensage, Cosmedix, Dermaceutic or Medik 8, as recommended by Michele following a skin assessment. For sensitive complexions, turn to Dermaceutic K Ceutic Post Treatment 30ml that restores the skin’s microcirculation and drench your skin with Medik8′ Hydr8 B5 Liquid Rehydration Serum 30ml to seal the moisture. This is crucial while you sleep.
Renowned for holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water for up to eight hours, Hydr8 B5 Liquid Rehydration Serum‘s powerful hyaluronic acid draws and binds moisture from the atmosphere directly into the deepest layers of the skin. Another super ingredient that has been infused into the serum is vitamin B5, which helps retain the water retention and regeneration of skin cells, leaving your skin looking hydrated, fresh and nourished. Void of oils and fragrances, the serum will not clog pores or trigger skin inflammations.
For an excellent moisturising cream, look no further than Medik 8’s C-Teltra Intense which protects your skin from free radical damage. What gives this product a run for its money is the ethylated ascorbic acid with a supercharged turmeric extract, which promotes a bright complexion by blocking the overproduction of melanin [uneven skin-tone known as hyperpigmentation]. Just apply a few drops after moisturising on the face, neck, hands and décolletage.
It is also essential that you cleanse using a fail-safe cleanser that will purify and replenish the skin, first thing in the morning and at night. Look no further than Medik 8’s Gentle Cleanse Hydrating Rosemary Foam which removes the day’s grime and environmental impurities without compromising the delicate balance of moisture in the skin and utilises the rosemary’s natural antioxidants to prevent free radical damage.
For the ultimate age-shattering skincare, we can introduce you to Medik 8’s Liquid Peptides serum to target fine lines and wrinkles and brighten the complexion, along with the Ultimate Recovery Bio-Cellulose Mask, which will allow your skin to be drenched in hyaluronic acid with zinc to restore and nurture sensitive skin.
